7:25 pm - Deathnote
|
Hurray for manga obsessions! I've recently become unhealthily addicted to a Young Magazine manga called "Deathnote". In a nutshell, the shinigami Ryuk "accidentally" loses his deathnote on the human plane. His deathnote is picked up by a young man who is (literally) the smartest high-schooler in Japan, Yagami Light. "Luckily", Ryuk left detailed instructions on how to use the deathnote: write the name of someone you want to kill in the deathnote. You must have the person's face in mind, too, so mistaken identities or people with the same name will not be affected. If you don't write a cause of death within 40 seconds, that person will simply die of a heart attack. Otherwise, you have 6 minutes and 40 seconds to write a cause of death. In other words, all you need to kill someone is a face and a name.
Much to Ryuk's amusement, Light has become a crusader for "justice", using 24-hour news access to give well-known criminals fatal heart attacks left and right. Light is determined to shape the world into a haven of peace, thus becoming the new world's god. Ryuk just thinks it's pretty funny. However, Light's actions are not unnoticed. A genius detective known only as L starts on the case to bring the serial killer known as "Killer" to justice. And thus starts a battle of wits that basically boils down to two idealogies: killing is murder no matter what the reasons, or killing is acceptable to prevent further crimes.
I think it says a little bit too much about my personality to admit how much I love this series and relate to Light. I mean, besides the god-complex and the vigilante-killing issues. But it's just so refreshing to read about such a truly intelligent main character, or main characters as it is. See, when I read a book or watch a movie, I always root for the side who has the better plan. Not the good guys, not the bad guys, not the underdogs, just whoever has a better battle plan. (Note that whoever has the better plan does not always win... luck or sheer stupidity also tend to win out.) Crappy plans (on any side) receive jeers and frustrated suggestions for how they should have operated in order to sucessfully save/decimate the village of children and puppies. Reading about Light and L as they dance around each other in a battle of wits, amid a growing body count and mounting twists... now that's my kinda manga.

8:20 pm - Giant Water Buffalo in Japan
|
So, back in February I was fortunate enough to get to visit Minako-chan in Japan for the first time, and am already hordeing more paid-time-off so I can go see her again soon. ^_^
Amongst my many fantastic experiences was, of course, the inevitable Manga Joygasm. Minako-chan was kind and patient as I went to purchase another suitcase to lug my books home in after my shopping binges. Eh-heh-heh. I caught up on a lot of series (the amount of G-Defend I brought home is laughable), and picked up quite a few random 100-yen purchases from the second-hand bookshop.
My favorite of them all has to be an early Koujima Naduki-sensei work. It's clearly a Final Fantasy VII doujinshi of Tseng and Rufus (Koujima-sensei's video game addiction is well-documented, besides the fact that well, it's hard to miss a Turk and his white-trenchcoated bon), but she renamed them to avoid those pesky copyright issues. Tseng became Brad, and Rufus became Karl. Except even SHE got mixed up, because in her 4-panel strip at the end, she calls him Kyle. >_< sensei, if you're going to lie right to our faces, at least keep your lie straight...
The most random book I pulled off the shelf was a "Million" comic titled "G線上の猫" ("Il gatto sul G", "A cat in the key of G") by Miyagi Tooko. It's a fantastic manga that's absolutely intrigued me, which is terrible because it's from a publisher I don't know and it's apparently a serial. An extremely slowly-released serial. (This tankouban has 4 years worth of stories.) Nooo, I can't get caught up in another long drawn-out relationship like this~~!
[a-hem] The book opens with nice-guy Atsushi finding an unconscious boy on his doorstep. After dragging him inside and bandaging up his injured hand, Atsushi realizes there's something not quite right with his new guest Riya. Riya's carrying around a violin, but says he doesn't play, that it belongs to his twin brother. Plus Riya's kind of an ungrateful pill, he seems to be suffering from some memory loss, and he can't even use chopsticks properly. But Atsushi can't get him out of his mind, and their paths cross frequently.
It's slowly revealed that this is a manga of split-personalities; what makes it so enthralling is that the Riya we get to know first is the divergent personality, the one that should be targeted and expunged by drugs and intense therapies and such. Riya's intense violin professors would certainly prefer to see him "normal". Fortunately, Atsushi is there to speak up for the part of Riya that no one wants.
The art is beautiful, it absolutely lives up to the cover art. The timing and use of pauses is some of the best ever: page 1 page 2 page 3 I'm hooked, thanks a lot, Miyagi-sensei. XP

7:47 pm - "Yoru ni mo Makezu"
|
Okay, so I decided that it was time to update some with mange reviews for things that I've read recently. I'll hopefully be updating the site (minus cover pictures until I find a scanner) soon as well. So enjoy the next few posts with my latest reads.
"Yoru ni mo Makezu" (I Won't Even Lose to the Night) by Majiko (Asuka Comics)
I picked up manga solely because I needed reading material and the cover was nearly Koge Donbo level cute. As it turns out, this manga does remind me of something I've read: "KickUP!" This is a fast-paced, action-packed, silly story set in a magical school. The tale goes like this: Kanzaki Niko and her older brother A-chan (I have no idea what his actual name is) are highly highly in debt. So Niko is thrilled when A-chan gets a job as a teacher at the highly prestigious St. Lunatic High School. Niko automatically gets in as a student, and it even includes free housing~! So they split from their old apartment in the middle of the night to avoid paying rent and head on over. As it turns out, the free housing is a moldy old shack with no amenities in the middle of campus. And the school? During the day, it's an exclusive academy for the highly intelligent and super rich. But at night, it turns into a school for magical beings. Guess which school Niko and A-chan are at?
The headmaster apparently has a plan to slowly integrate the human and magic worlds. A-chan's homeroom class includes a pumpkin-headed boy, a skeleton girl, a girl who looks like an Easter island head, and a boy who looks suspiciously like a character from Digimon. Niko is the only human, but she's somewhat drawn to Ren-kun, the only other human looking student. Niko desperately wants to leave, but this is A-chan's 100th job in just a year, and the first he's kept for a week. A-chan loves his job and his "individualistic" students, so it's up to Niko to hold out and try her best to fit in despite the major culture shock.
The story is silly, wild, and just out to make you laugh. Therefore, it's really not all that hard to follow, making it a pretty easy read. This is Majiko-sensei's first work, but she does excellent comedy drawings, and even the rare serious shots are very solid. The one thing about her artwork that may take you by surprise is simply how busy the pages are. She tends to have so many things going on in just one page that it almost gets difficult to absorb it all. Pictures flow out of their boxes and squeeze in between the dialogue boxes. It's a bit confusing at times, but it also seems very appropriate for such a fast-paced story. It certainly never gets dull~! All in all, great fun fluffy story that's good for a few laughs.

Here's something that's sure to make any Love Mode fan scream. Coming out in September is "Love Mode CD 4". Included in the cast for #4, btw, is Ohkawa Tohru as Tien-lu (? maybe the wrong name, but you know who I'm talking about...?). XD KYA~!
And THAT's not even the best part. The best part is this: Love Mode 5 AND 6 are also in the planning. KYA~!!
We love you too, Sensei.

One new review, Luv #2, the Uniform issue.
How the hell do you translate Shiru-Daku in a concise manner? Err...
If you aren't reading CLAMP's new series Tsubasa and XXXHolic, they've been released in English by Del Rey so now you have NO excuse not to pick them up. I really, really want the CLAMP chess set that's coming out, but have no idea how to get it. ;_;

12:53 pm - The Never-Ending Story
|
For those who haven't been keeping up with Fushigi Yuugi news (because I know I sure haven't), you may have thought that the days of Fushigi Yuugi manga were long past.
Well HA~! You're wrong~!!!
Watase-sensei recently started a new Fushigi Yuugi series telling the story of the Genbu Shichiseishi. How exciting~! I always love reading stories where everyone ends up dying and/or eaten by giant turtle-snakes.
I discovered this little fact when I saw volume 2 sitting in the "new releases" section of the local book store. And in all seriousness, the sight of Tomite firing off an arrow was enought to make me want to cry. [sigh] Guess what else has just been added to my "must read" list...

5:48 pm - Sequel-ness!
|
This was a very good month for manga buying: Mezase HERO! 2 by Kodaka Kazuma and Finder's Cage (the second in Yamane Ayano's Finder's Series) came out from Biblos, and Higuri You's rejouventated Gorgeous Carat Galaxy was also released. I just barely finished translating the last of Mezase HERO!, so I'm more than a little depressed, but that's another story.
Mezase HERO! 2 is basically Kodaka-sensei trying to make everyone happy by hooking them up into adorable little couples. Since I can't even really consider this a spoiler, I'll say that it turns out that Mahori has an older brother, which means that everyone can be happy with a Mahori of their own. Considering it's a hook-up volume, and from Kodaka-sensei no less, it's pretty darned clean.
The same can not be said for Finder's Cage. How I adore Yamane-sensei. There's a Finder's series story from LUV #6 (oh Akihito, when will you learn to stop trusting cops...?) and an unrelated story from LUV #1 included, but the bulk of the volume is taken up by "Kourou no Hana", a Finder's related tale. It tells the "love story" between Hong Kong mafia raised Fei-Long and Asami. It's not exactly a picnic and flowers type of story. It's more, um, a knives and guns and large attack dogs type of story. But then again, it's Fei-Long and Asami. You shouldn't be surprised.
For something of a completely different flavor, there's Gorgeous Carat Galaxy. It's really freaking long, which made Mina-P very very sad. (T_T) So much to translate...~! I had joked that with a title like Gorgeous Carat Galaxy, maybe it followed the adventures of Noir and Florian and gang in space. That was, of course, completely off track. It's about an obsessive pixy. Now, I haven't thoroughly read it yet, so I could be off, but that seems to be the general gist of things. Um... okay.

9:54 am - A German Kaoru-kun
|
Good news for all~! I found Anzai Nobuyuki's (Recca no Honoo author) newest work~! It was quite by coincidence, too. I was renting some CDs from Tsutaya, and with it came the free Shounen "Tsutaya" Sunday mini-comic. And what an advertising job it did~! Although most was devoted to Detective Conan (the plot of which I have only recently figured out), it featured super-short comics from other big-named Shounen Sunday artists, including Anzai-sensei and [drumroll please]...
MÄR
No, seriously, that's the title. The subtitle is "Märchen Awakens Romance". The story (from what I can tell) is about a genki young boy (Kaoru-kun, basically) named Toramizu Ginta. He's a normal 13 year old who gets sucked from his world of Märchen into the other-world of Märheaven. There, he hooks up with the genki young princess Snow to fight the evil Chess Army and the Class 1 Knight, Phantom. (As can be expected, Phantom is obviously very beautiful although he wears a stylish mask.)
But, of course, Kaoru --er, Ginta-- has special powers in the form of his ÄRM (not his ARMS or ARM even, but his ÄRM). His ÄRM is the rarest of the rare. It also appears to be a talking ball-and-chain with an ugly face named "Bobbo". Ginta has some very large-but-cute companions with him, and there's an entire line of stylish Chess army members. Favorites just from glancing at the EXTREMELY far away group shot and few close-ups include: The masked S&M Sexpot wearing what appears to be a jaunty beret, the Beautiful One who is far to pretty to be anything other than male in an Anzai-sensei work, the old guy with a tree growing from his head, and the little guy who appears to be attached to a cross.
Anzai-sensei said that this comic he first created back in high school, although the lead back then was female, thus explaining the title. He also said it used to be about pirates, so I'm not entirely sure why he says it's the same work. Anyway, I think he basically came to the realization that Kaoru-kun kicked booty, so decided to write an entire manga about him. Only, at least, Ginta won't constantly be fighting people who used to be his nakama, then proceed to beat him up, then proceed to reform and tearily wish him the best of luck in the future.

...yet. I'm finding the compilation reviews really difficult, probably because I'm so damned chatty and it's hard to pare it down to a few sentences about each work.
But there are three new Koide Mieko tankouban rundowns. Now the page looks lopsided, I'll have to remedy that soon. Yes, I'm a Virgo, and such an uneven site bothers me. XD

10:40 pm - Valentines!
|
Did everyone have a nice holiday? Are you getting ready for White Day next month? ^_^ No worries, Mako-chan spent the holiday sobbing over the "Ayashi no Ceres" anime and eating Girl Scout cookies.
So, I got a hefty order of manga in from Amazon! A whole bunch of BL, and three volumes of "Tsubasa RC", which was completely shounen until Ringo-chan pointed out how much Fye-san looks like Carson from "Queer Eye", and my world exploded. So let's get right to it, ne? :)
*Luv #3, "Shiru-Daku"! It's ABSOLUTELY not as bad as I thought it would be. I mean, it's BAD, but not "Oh god, my Spleen" bad. Just a little campy here and there. The first story, while really unsexy, had the most creative liquid, calligraphy ink. Ooo, bravo, has someone seen "The Pillow Book"? XD Then rain, a river, a swimming pool, a bath, pastries and honey, sweat I suppose (Nitta-sensei wasn't quite as obvious as the rest), soup, and Higashizato-sensei brought back her favorite couple to cover as MANY shiru-daku possibilities in one little story, including showers, washing dishes, a jacuzzi tub, and of course the obvious one. There's a cute little segment in the end, about "Hajimete no Ecchi" scenes. Interesting demographics there, too.
*Luv #4, "Pheromones". mmmmm, shimizu-sensei goodies [eyes roll back into head]. Dammit, I want to read Recipe already. -_- Anyway, I'm not entirely clear what makes all these stories so pheromone-themed, but maybe they're a bit more peppery than usual. ... No, no they're not, actually there's a bit more love-love than usual. Works for me! Naono Bohra-sensei has a follow-up to her Occult Zips story that I've been praying for... and Aogiri Mikoto has really kick-ass art. She only gets a twelve-pager here, but she's definitely on my list. The "Pheromone King" lists amuse me as well, but you're all fooling yourself if you think Katou-kun would EVER beat Aoe-san or Masa. Nuh-uh. [wink]
*Luv #5, "Guys With Glasses". Yamane-sensei starts things off with a ridiculously hot little piece that could have gone in either Shiru-Daku or Pheromones, and fit perfectly well... baking is way sexy. Then Tsurugi Kai-sensei gets a nice long story too. Her art seems to be coming into its own more, she's developing her own style and that's always wonderful to see. Then you can take the quiz to see what kind of glasses fetish you have! Ha ha, fun for the whole family.
*"Ikura nandemo suki sugiru" by Honjyou Rie. Cute! Cute! But some interesting stories in here, definitely. Her Zips have played with my little heart, so I'm excited to give a full tankouban a run.
*"Takuhai Cupid" by CJ Michalski. Um, what can I say in my defense. The cover is adorable, and the book is Puchi-free! Mm, mm, that makes it all better. (CJ-sensei does mention more than once how much she likes Puchi, but we're all well aware of that.) Anyway, it's precious and man, must heaven be a wacky wacky place. XD Sadly, CJ-sensei and I will be going to hell, so...
*"Bokura no Oukoku 3" by Koujima Naduki. Damn, three volumes and Okumiya-san and Shigure are starting to drive me up the wall. o_o I'm getting impatient in my old age, it took 6 or 7 volumes of Kizuna before I wanted to throttle Masa for his saintly restraint. Anyway! Akira and Rei make new friends at school, and then they just make out. Oukoku 3 in a nutshell. ;)
*"Junjou karen" by Koide Mieko. Ooooo, angsty unhealthy relationships from Koide-sensei. She does them oh-so-well, and they really distress me. The spine says "#1", so while I thought the story might be over (granted, in a rather unhappy fashion, but she doesn't always appease me with happy endings) it looks like it'll keep going. An unexpected work for Chara, I think, but it's verrrrrrrrry good.
*"Koi no yamai no tsukeru Kusuri" by Koide Mieko. Busy girl. The first story is from South magazine, but the title work ran in Dear+. Haven't read it well yet, I've been spoiled by furigana and have to think for myself. XD Mmm, rock stars, wonder if they're accidentally named after Johnny's. wink wink nudge nudge.
And Juvenile Orion #5! I haven't even opened it yet, I'm too too sad that it's over. ;_; Extremely pretty Amou and Tomonori-san cover. ... why do all my series have to end. ;_;
Okay, that's it for now! Back to reading Tsubasa and absolutely not thinking about making another Sakura costume.

9:25 pm - Recent releases
|
Just a quick note for some fun releases. From Biblos this month there's Matou Sanami's "Trash". It promises to be a New York action comedy involving a penguin. Seriously, look at the cover. Next month they'll have Higuri Yuu's "Gakuen Heaven". I'm entirely too excited about this one for my own good. The PS2 game associated with it was also recently reviewed in EGM, the American gaming magazine. Seriously. I nearly wet myself, it was so funny. Higuri-sensei is also still churning out those volumes of Cantarella, for those who are keeping track. Volume 7 is out, and I'm so dang lost.
On the Kotegawa Yua front, she has released both another volume of "Shikeishuu 042", and the one-shot "Line". I'm too excited for words, and absolutely can't wait to read both.
In random news, Takaguchi Satosumi-sensei is releasing a manga for </b>"Miracle Dieter Miyuki"</b>. This is the title of one of the fake anime works produced in the seiyuu (voice actor) love dramedy "Sakendeyaruze! I love that series, and "Miyuki" was absolutely freaking hysterical. Watch as the magical transforming girl Miyuki saves young women around the world from high-fattening sweets~! Too much fun.
On a side note, I'm ready to give up. Does anyone know what the heck happened to Matsushita Youko-sensei of Yami no Matsuei fame? Did she die, or what the heck happened to her?

8:56 pm - AH Update
|
Just a little one. I uploaded images for a couple reviews that were missing them, and am trying out a slightly-altered system for reviewing a compilation.
In any Biblos compilation (Zips, Luv, JunkBoy, whatever), there's always a story or two that takes me by surprise. It's no shock that I loved the contributions of Yamada D-sensei (now her PN is Nekota-sensei) or Yamane-sensei. But Murakami Sachi-sensei's installment, as well as Nanten-sensei's for sheer mero-mero value, really impressed me. I'm a schoolboy romance connoisseur, and these were both very cute. Luv #1 was a pretty good book all around, and honestly I would have bought anything that Shimizu Yuki-sensei even sneezed on (not to mention Yamane-sensei), but I'm a cheeseball at heart. Thanks for humoring me for an issue, Biblos.
...next up is the Seifuku issue review. Ha ha ha ha.

2:05 pm - LUV #6
|
I honestly don't know why Biblos discontinued their dirty anthology series "Zips". Each Biblos Zips had a great collection of stories related to different themes that ranged from S&M to Doctors to Poverty to "Nice Middle" (which really isn't what you think it is). Then they started up "LUV", which replaced their "Zips" line. With initials themes of "Mero-mero" (glowingly in love) and "Uniforms", it looked like it might be the slightly cleaner cousin of "Zips". But then, they demolished that theory with theme #3, "Shiru-daku". The best way to loosely translate that is "covered in liquid of some sort". >_<
After themes of "Eyeglasses" and "Pheromones", we now head into the 6th LUV collection, which is the Tyrant LUV. Seriously. The cover is a lovely Yamane Ayano shot that only barely stops short from showing a whole damned lot. I-I don't know what to think...

5:11 pm - November Amazon order
|
The weather has turned very cold here, so it's time for some new books to warm up by the fire to. (Well, we can't light a fire either, the natural gas prices are too high. Let's just say... curl up under a blanket and enjoy!)
If I'd been willing to wait a couple weeks, I could have picked up Bokurano Oukoku #3, but I'm too impatient. Anyway, it comes out later this month, so definitely keep an eye out for it.
I'm doing a lot more point-and-shoot now, since most of my long-running series are over and things are pretty quiet. But I did rush to get the new volume of E'S (and had to resist picking up the re-releases of all the old volumes), waiting in anticipation for Kai and Eiji to meet up. Ooo, bad times, I'm psyched. XD
Also, the first volume of XXXHolic and Tsubasa, the new simultaneous release CLAMP shounens. I think both look extremely promising in a tasty CLAMP sort of way. Then, my requisite lot of Boy's Love to meet some new artists and see what happens. :) A Gust (by Yashiki Yukari, since her Zips have been interesting), a couple Charas (one Koide, one random), Tsurugi-sensei's Biblos, a {coughcough)cj-sensei(coughcough), and I'm finally picking up a book by Misasagi-sensei. Misasagi-sensei has the distinction of writing the only story for June magazine that didn't make me want to vomit up my Frappucino. Maybe I can finally learn the name of the character from her series that I've had a crush on for years now. XD

Just a couple new reviews from Makoto (damn, I was long-winded on the Yamane one).
It's about time for another order, I really need to get CLAMP's new stuff that came out a couple months back! And I'm really enjoying Asami Tohjou-sensei's new high-school work, so I need to get the follow-up issue of it. It's so cheesy and over-the-top (does she need a stalker AND a bus chikan in the same storyline?) but the seme has absolutely captured my heart. I'm so weak.

11:27 pm - Kotegawa Yua
|
I have recently become completely addicted to any and all works by Kotegawa Yua (see her homepage here). She's an absolutely fantastic artist and great story teller, bringing action packed shounens with a woman's touch. I've read two of her works so far, and absolutely loved both, so I thought I'd write a quickie mini-plot before I get an official one up on the site.
Anne Freaks Yuri is a sweet, impressionable young man who has just killed his mother. He didn't really mean to, but he panics, of course, especially since he is haunted by his mother's spirit. Luckily(?), who should come along but Anna, a beautiful young killer. She instructs Yuri on the correct way to bury a body, and then takes him under her wing when he runs from the law. Mitsuho is a young Osakan guy who's father and sister are killed. He seeks revenge with help from Anna, who also recruits him for her campaign. As it turns out, Yuri, Mitsuho, and Anna have a deeper connection. They are all the children of the leaders of a terrorist cult. Anna aims to take down the cult and its leader, her father. The three young teens are aided by Anna's keeper (a slightly suicidal mob doctor) and a gun-collecting priest with connections to the cult. But two female cops are out to stop them. One hopes on reforming the children, while the other wants to take them down by any means possible.
This thing's bloody, as one might expect, but surprisingly funny. As the series progresses, it becomes apparent that not all of the characters are who they seem, and are not necessarily as sane as they seem, either. The only series where I can say, "My favorite character was, by far, the physically abusive junior yakuza boss." I cheered when he reappeared. ;-_-
Shikeishuu oshini (Deathrow Inmate 042) When Tajima was 8, he disappeared completely, only to reappear covered in wounds at 14. He never spoke of what happened to him during those 6 years. When Tajima was 21, his mother was deep in debt and he decided that the only way to pay it off was to join yakuza-sponsored death-match boxing. Tajima was a big winner, but the games were raided, and Tajima was sent to death row for the deaths of seven others.
Ten years later, the government has a change of policy. They're outlawing the death penalty, as well as life terms in prison. In an effort to find a viable alternative, young doctor Shiina chooses Tajima, deathrow inmate 042, as a test subject: they will implant a chip into his brain that will explode if he gets angry, but inmate 042 will serve the rest of his life in service to the public in relative freedom. Shiina and his team get 042 a job as janitor/gardener at a private high school. There 042 befriends a blind girl named Yume and her sexy braille volunteer, Ayano, as he learns to regain his emotions and mix with society.
I'm almost ticked that I got this series, because it's so bloody good, but it's still ongoing. I'm too impatient~! Tell me what happens now~!! I'm completely in love with Shiina. He's an interesting character. Although he wants to see 042 succeed and live a productive life, he doesn't let himself forget that his primary objective is still running a thorough test case. At the same time, he's extremely un-doctorly. He has long hair, rides a motorcycle, wears hip clothing, and gets drunk while still kinda on duty (although if you ask him, he was drinking cans of coffee). [looking at above comment] I also apparently have really strange taste in men. ;^_^
